Inside & Outside “the Bubble”: AIA Columbus Healthcare Symposium Recap

More than 100 architects, designers, and industry leaders gathered for the AIA Columbus Healthcare Symposium to explore how design can address healthcare disparities across Ohio. While Central Ohio boasts a dense concentration of medical resources, other regions—especially rural counties—struggle with limited or no access to care. Even within the region’s healthcare “bubble,” challenges like food deserts persist just blocks from top hospitals.

Two expert panels discussed the social determinants of health—from housing and transportation to stigma around mental health and food insecurity—and how healthcare systems are adapting to meet these needs. Keynote speaker Samantha Hendrickson of The Columbus Dispatch shared real-world stories from her reporting, grounding the day in lived experience.

In the afternoon, participants collaborated in a design charrette focused on creating equitable, community-based healthcare solutions. The event underscored the essential role of architects in shaping healthier, more inclusive communities—both inside and outside the “bubble.”
