The International Code Council (ICC) is currently developing the 2027 building codes. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) plays an active role in this process through its National Codes and Standards Committee, which reviews proposed changes and represents the AIA at ICC hearings. Howard Blaisdell, a member of this committee, attended the ICC CAH2 hearings held in Cleveland over 8 days last month.
The AIA supported several proposals aimed at improving access to natural light in buildings. These included:
-
Requiring natural light in sleeping rooms within R occupancies.
-
Approved to move forward to the public comment period.
-
AIA recommends adding the phrase, “This does not apply to existing buildings,” or similar to accommodate adaptive reuse projects but provide guardrails to maintain equitable housing.
-
-
Requiring natural light in dormitory sleeping rooms.
-
Did not advance yet in order to focus on the proposal for R occupancy sleeping rooms.
-
-
Ensuring that at least 50% of classrooms receive natural light.
-
Approved to proceed to public comment.
-
In addition, the AIA supported a proposal to include an optional appendix focused on reducing embodied carbon, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to sustainable design.
These efforts reflect the AIA’s ongoing dedication to promoting healthier, more sustainable environments through thoughtful building code development.
