Tour Series: Curious by Design-Reimagining a Bexley Original

Earn 1.0 LU|HSW

Presented by CRAN.

Bexley was established in 1908. Known for its cohesive residential fabric, schools and walkability – a large percentage of the homes were built in the 1920’s. Great examples of many styles can be found on the tree-lined streets. Some small percentage – call it 5% – fall into a category of “curious homes.” Not like the others. Some of these 5% homes are Spanish Revival. Some are Cotswold style cottages. Some are very contemporary. Some are modern in a mid-century way.

The original house built on this site (two parcels actually) was one of these 5% Houses. A curious low-slung mid-century home – perhaps better suited to a lake view than this corner lot. The mismatch of the topography and architecture produced a two-story brick box as one of the primary elevations. Loved by some, loathed by some… but in almost every case, known by Bexley residents.

The house sat empty for some time and was purchased by new owners, both originally from California, who loved the location and found the house intriguing. GRA+D Architects was hired to study ways the original structure could be retrofitted for their use. Studies for its replacement were also commissioned. Ultimately it was concluded that retrofitting the original structure would be infeasible.

Stated goals for the project

  • A design that honored the curious architectural language of the original in some way
  • A design that would take better advantage of the corner site
  • A home that would allow them to age in place – anticipating various possible futures
  • A low maintenance / high performance exterior envelope
  • An interior that connects comfortably to the exterior but avoids feeling like a movie set
  • A home that is comfortable day to day for occupancy by two – but can flex to accommodate significantly more family members for a few weeks each year

The project was required to go through the City of Bexley’s Architectural Review Board process – which it did (receiving permission for demolition and approval of the new design) in two meetings. The design for the house required no variances.

The architect is GRA-D Architects.
