The Clintonville Passive House

Earn 1.0 LU|HSW

Presented by CRAN & COTE

Join us for an engaging presentation by Steven Rhodes, the owner and builder of Central Ohio’s first certified single-family passive house. Steven will share firsthand insights from designing, constructing, and living in a home that meets one of the world’s most rigorous building performance standards — right here in Central Ohio.

The session will focus on three key themes:

  1. Building Envelope Design — How assemblies, details, and energy modeling came together to achieve airtightness and comfort. Steven will discuss insulation strategies, critical junctions, high-performance components, and how Passive House principles were adapted to our regional climate.
  2. Cost + Value — A candid look at what it took to deliver this level of performance. Learn how costs compared to a conventional custom home, what drove the biggest premiums, how they were managed, and what the real return has been in energy use, comfort, and livability.
  3. Lessons Learned — Reflections on the process, from construction challenges to trade education, and what Steven would do differently next time. He’ll also share advice for architects interested in pursuing Passive House or high-performance projects, and thoughts on what’s needed to expand this movement in Columbus.

This is a rare opportunity to hear directly from someone who built — and now lives in — a certified Passive House.

Lunch will be provided.
