Building Science: Control Layers in Residential Practice

Earn 1.5 LU|HSW

Presented by CRAN

Architect and energy consultant Emily Mottram will lead an in-depth look at the four essential control layers in residential design: air, water, vapor, and thermal. In response to key feedback from our Fall 2024 Building Science panel, this session is designed to simplify core building science concepts and make them accessible at a foundational level. Emily will share practical strategies for integrating these principles during the design and documentation phases—and offer guidance on what architects should be looking for during construction.

This session provides a comprehensive look at best practices for managing control layers—water, air, vapor, and thermal—through all phases of residential construction in Climate Zone 5. Beginning with foundational building science concepts, the session explores how to effectively design for durability and occupant health through strategic material choices and thoughtful detailing. Participants will examine how clear documentation can improve construction outcomes and learn practical strategies for successful construction administration. Real-world examples and lessons learned from the field help bridge the gap between good intentions and good execution.

Designed for architects and design professionals, this session emphasizes approaches that reduce building failure risk, improve energy performance, and ensure safe, healthy indoor environments.
