A New Playbook for Pediatric Behavioral Health

Presented by the Academy of Architecture for Health

With 34% increase in Hospital days and 25% Outpatient growth predicted over the next 10 years, behavioral health is the fastest growing service line in pediatrics. Strategies to accommodate this growth will be a huge factor in being able to effectively provide care. This session will take a comprehensive, systems-based approach to defining care delivery and provide examples at each point in the spectrum of care. We will explore trauma informed design using salutogenic strategies using a case study of the award-winning William K. Schubert M.D. Mental Health Center on Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center’s College Hill Campus. Proud to be the largest pediatric inpatient behavioral hospital in the US, this facility used salutogenic and evidence-based strategies to develop an advanced care model that is having a positive impact on patient outcomes. The model of care is embodied in the landscape, architecture, and interior design. We will also discuss the importance of studying design post occupancy and share results from our ongoing post occupancy study conducted in partnership with Clemson University Architecture and Health Program and how this project is informing the development of a pediatric behavioral health toolkit.
