22nd Century City Workshop

Calling all students and design professionals

Presented by AIAS + NOMAS + NOMA Columbus + AIA Columbus

22nd Century City is a one-day workshop and multi-week exhibit designed to bring together local students and design professionals to envision bold, inclusive futures for Columbus, Ohio in the year 2100. By fostering intergenerational collaboration and thinking beyond traditional modes of practice, the program aims to generate novel design approaches and provoke discourse around the long-term future of the built environment.

Hosted at OSU’s Knowlton School, the workshop will assemble teams of 3–5 students paired with 2–3 professionals from architecture, planning, and landscape architecture.

The workshop begins with a creative writing exercise that invites participants to speculate on Columbus’s future through the lens of fictional characters—such as a long-lived resident, a time-traveling teenager, or an unhoused person. These narratives prompt teams to address challenges and opportunities related to urban conditions, infrastructure, climate, zoning, and equity. Ideas will be translated into speculative master plans and ephemera, culminating in a public exhibit and publication.

Lunch will be provided.
