Come join the AIA Emerging Professionals on an excursion to one of the country's architectural meccas, Columbus, Indiana. The community is known for modern architecture designed by I.M. Pei, Richard Meier, Robert Venturi, Eliel and Eero Saarinen, Harry Weese, and Deborah Berke, to name a few. 


Time: 7 AM Departure  |  6 PM Return

Transportation is on your own, carpooling is encouraged. The Emerging Professionals have a meeting on Tuesday, July 12th at 6:30 PM at Bar Louie on Park Street to further discuss this trip. If interested, feel free to attend this meeting!

In traditional project delivery settings, Design Phase and Construction Phase Coordination prevents true collaboration between the Design and Construct project teams. Through CM-at-Risk, Design-Assist, Design-Build and IPD project delivery types, optimization of Design Phase coordination can occur through early team engagement – thus working to create a more streamlined Construction Coordination effort. Like many facets of the building construction industry, we must challenge ourselves to “begin with the end in mind”. Design Coordination teams constantly face this challenge, in order to somehow use their ‘crystal ball’ and see the end result based on early design coordination strategies, techniques, and systems layout. Likewise, Construction Coordination teams must interpret the intent of the Design Team coordination effort, while working within the parameters of the Builder and the Owner.

But what happens in a dynamic project where design and construction coordination “beginnings” and “ends” blur together? When coordination parameters change often during the process? How does this all get managed?

Join AIA Columbus for a special presentation into a case study which looks at managing this dynamic process in a Design-Build setting on a large scale, multiple building project from both the Design and Construct perspectives.

Virtual Construction Manager | Operations Technology Services
Alex brings a diverse background of experience and knowledge within the A/E/C industry to Messer Construction's Operations Technology Services group. Alex graduated from The Ohio State University with a dual degree in Architecture and Construction Management and utilizes his expertise from both sides of the industry to thoroughly understand the entire scope of construction projects while coordinating effective project management. Alex strives for innovative and practical construction management strategies to ensure that all managerial aspects are coordinated with the client's best interests in mind.

Alex has held various roles throughout his construction operations experience and presently is part of a six person Virtual Construction Team responsible for the implementation, coordination, and management of Messer's Building Information Modeling (BIM) best practices company-wide. From corporate office to construction site, the VCTeam promotes, trains and guides Project Teams through the BIM process over the course of a building's lifecycle.

Paul Schmidt - Messer Construction Company 
Paul brings more than a decade of complexed healthcare construction experience and work on over 19 projects during his tenure with Messer Construction Co. He joined the Messer team in 2001 and currently serves as Project Executive on The Ohio State University's $305MM North Residential District Transformation (NRDT) Project.

Paul's primary role as Project Executive is dedicated to management of processes and best practices, QA/QC leadership and expediting project and safety control measures. From high level to fine detail, Paul utilizes his technical expertise with Builting Information Modeling (BIM) to facilitate model reviews with Designers, Owner, and Trade Contractors. Paul will often incorporate BIM into weekly Project Meetings, Trade Coordination sessions and with Field Teams to review complexed details, ensure proper coordination and to convey visualization and expectations to End Users. Paul holds a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from The Ohio State University.
